Quest Laguna Resort provides rock climbing and abseiling courses using a 15 metre tower with three faces (75 degree, vertical and overhang). After various climbs on the tower, instructors teach the technique of abseiling safely back to the ground.
For technical rock climbing, the world class limestone islands to the east of Phuket and in Phang Nga Bay are quite famous. The French grading system is typically used, with routes for all grades - beginners and experts alike. Try the islands of Ko Yai Noi, Ko Lo Lah, Ko Pak Bia and Ko La Ding.
Typically many of the climbs are accessible only by boat (traditional longtail boat, dinghy, or speedboat), while a few are approached via a jungle walk or even by abseiling above the sea.
Needless to say, always use a reliable experienced company.
The limestone cliffs of Krabi are extremely popular, challenging and beautiful (especially the headland between Phra Nang Cave and Railay East beach). There are several hundred routes, and instruction and guided climbs are readily available.
To see rock climbing in the raw, visit the Viking Cave at the Phi Phi islands, and watch the birds nest gatherers perform their dangerous task - no ropes, just bamboo scaffolding.
